Measure
What gets measured
50 indicators are computed for every patent. Most are calculated from the patent record: citations, family, claims, dates, legal status. The rest are graded by closed-database AI tools reading the patent text.
Each indicator carries three numbers: a raw value, its percentile in the pool, and its weight inside its pillar. The Study report lists all 50 with those three numbers each. This page does not.

Indicators aggregate into eight pillars. Each pillar rolls up its own indicators as a weighted average, and the pillars are then weighted independently of each other.
The distribution is not even, and that is itself information: Text Quality and Legal Strength carry eight indicators each, Network Centrality carries four.
Compare against
What the pool is
A score is a position, so it needs a set to hold a position in. Your patent is ranked against 1433 patents held by TIS and its partners, patents we also license commercially.
So a rank tells you where you sit against our inventory, not against every patent in the world, and it is not an independent benchmark. We would rather say that plainly than have you assume otherwise. The indicator values themselves are computed from Innovue's 180M-patent database.
The pool re-ranks as patents are granted and lapse. Your number can move even when nothing about your patent has.
Position
A raw value becomes a position
Every indicator is normalised the same way: rank the raw value inside the pool, take its percentile. A patent with 47 forward citations is not scored on 47. It is scored on where 47 falls among 1433.
There is one basis for all of it. Industry is recorded as descriptive metadata but is not a comparison cohort: a semiconductor patent and a biotech patent are ranked in the same pool.
Grade
A position becomes a letter
The weighted pillar scores compose into one PSS on a 0–100 scale, and that score's percentile in the pool resolves to one of five grades.
The shares are fixed: S is the top 15% of the pool, then A 20, B 30, C 20, D 15. The exact cut-points are calibrated against the pool's live distribution, so this page gives the shares and not the thresholds.
Indicator names are redacted on purpose. The structure is the point: the same numbers sit behind every one of the 50. Illustrative values
