This describes what a TIS rating does and doesn't tell you.

What a TIS report is

A rating and an analysis. Every patent we evaluate gets an SABCD grade and a score built from 50 indicators — most computed from patent records, the rest graded by closed-database AI tools reading the patent text. Our analysts direct the work and review what comes out of it.

What it isn't

It is not a legal opinion. Not a freedom-to-operate analysis, not an infringement or validity opinion, and no substitute for a patent attorney. It is not investment advice. What you decide after reading one is your decision, and you should do your own diligence before acting on it.

A rating is a position, not a verdict

Your patent is ranked against a reference pool of patents held by TIS and its partners — patents we also license commercially. So a rank tells you where you sit against our inventory, not against every patent in the world, and it is not an independent benchmark. We would rather say that plainly than have you assume otherwise.

The pool re-ranks as patents are granted and lapse. Your number can move even when nothing about your patent has. A report is a snapshot of the day it was made.

Where the data comes from

Innovue's patent database, around 180 million records. Innovue is also a shareholder in TIS. Like every patent dataset it carries publication delays, incomplete family records and the occasional transcription error, and we don't verify every underlying record ourselves.

What we do with what you send us

Drafts and unfiled ideas are treated as confidential. We don't sell them and we don't let them be used to train AI models. Producing your report will mean our analysts read them, and the material will pass through Innovue on the way. The Privacy Policy has the detail, including how long we keep it.
